早速、マイケル先生が遠藤先生へメールを出してくださいました。

Dear Dr. Endo,
I received this piece of good news from my old friend Takeo Miyamura. As you can see, he is delighted by your generosity.

He tells me that you got your degree from St. Andrews and specialized in the Gospel of John. That sounds as if you may have worked with Richard Bauckham, and as you probably know, Bauckham is working on a major commentary on John that I'm sure will be a worthy match for my own. Not competitors, I think, because each should boost the sales of the other. I met Richard only once, in Canada where we both contributed to a colloquium sponsored by Richard Longenecker at McMaster.

The other major commentary in the works is that of Harold Attridge at Yale, and if his commentary on Hebrews is any indication, that too will be a superb piece of work. So we have an embarrassment of riches, as they say, on John. I've not seen the ones by Dale Bruner or by Urban von Wahlde, but they too, I suspect, are major contributions.

Takeo was one of the finest students I ever had at Gordon (I don't remember whether it was Gordon-Conwell then or Gordon Divinity School).

With warm greetings,

Ramsey Michaels

そして遠藤先生からマイケル先生へのメール。

Dear Prof. Ramsey Michaels
It is such an honor to have email from you. I was very excited to have received your mail, just while talking with Rev. Miyamura on the phone last night. Rev. Miyamura often told me how wonderful days it was when he studied at Gordon Divinity School. A couple weeks ago, he talked about your new commentary on the Gospel of John. He was very glad that I had already got it and enjoyed reading and learning from it. And I was also surprised to know that you were one of the teachers who gave a spiritual impact
on Rev. Miyamura. I respect him very much as a pastor and theologian. He shows his generosity to introduce me to you.

I am a graduate of Gordon Conwell theological seminary. I studied New Testament under the guidance of Prof. Greg Beale and Gordon Grenler. Prof. Richard Bauckham was my supervisor at St. Andrews. His guidance was so thorough and insightful that I had never lost my direction. I remember how excited I was when I was sitting before him at his office. He will come to visit us nest year. It will become his third trip to Japan. He feels sympathy for our situation, and tells us that he wands to do something for Japanese people.

My thesis was published from WUNT (Tübingen in 2002), titled 'Creation and Christology: A Study on the Johannine Prologue in the Light of Early Jewish Creation Accounts.' Now I am working on the commentary on the Book of Revelation, and I have been involved in the New Japanese Bible translation project, especially on the Johannine literature. In the future I am going to write a commentary on the Gospel of John too. It is my great honor and privilege if I could have contact with you, and learn from you.

Thank you again, and with warm greetings,
Masa

この美しいメールに対するマイケル先生の最初のものよりさらに親しみを込めたメール。

Dear Masa,
So good to be in touch with you. I remember seeing a notice of your WUNT publication in New Testament Abstracts. I have a commentary on Revelation, published with InterVarsity in 1997. It has recently gone into paperback. Much smaller than Greg Beale's magisterial work, and more for a popular audience, but I hope you are able to interact with it in your own Revelation commentary.

While I don't know Richard Bauckham well, his interests and mine remarkably coincide: John, Revelation and the Petrines (he on 2 Peter, I on 1 Peter). When I met him in Canada, he accompanied the Longeneckers and my wife and I on "The Maid of the Mist," a tourist boat that came frighteningly close to Niagara Falls. It's exciting that you will see him again in Japan.

With best wishes,
Ramsey
